Walter Langley 1852 – 1922
Born in Birmingham, he was one of the first to settle in the Newlyn artists’ colony. He was noted for his social realist portrayals of working class figures, particularly fishermen and their families. He painted in watercolour and oils and his early training lithography gives his painting a detail and texture. I came across him while watching Watercolour Challenge and I was attracted to the tonal range he manages to achieve with watercolour. Some of his watercolour paintings are shown below.
